Linux Networking LPI 102 Course
Course Information and Aims
The Linux Networking Course covers the configuration and use of various network servers and networking tools which are available for the Linux platform.
The course will help you to get past the initial hurdles to using Linux in the server environment.
The course aims to explain the principles of networking on Linux, and provide practical experience in installing and configuring Linux servers.
It is an intensive course which covers a lot of content in a short space of time.
Audience
This course is designed to be a follow on course to the LPI 101 courses (Utilities and Tools, Installation and Configuration). This course assumes the
student has a basic level of Linux skills and knowledge, in particular:
- The ability to use a Linux editor proficiently.
- The ability to install software on Linux.
- You should know how to use the following Linux commands: ps, kill, vi, cd, tail, less, ls, grep, cat.
- You should understand redirection.
Apart from this, you may be anybody - an IT manager, a system integrator, a network architect, a software
engineer or a common or garden Linux enthusiast. You may do this course before or after the System Administration
course.
Networking experience and general familiarity is recommended. If you have no prior experience, you should
first attend a more fundamental course.
List of Objectivies
The course provides training and experience in the installation and configuration of the network servers that Linux
supports. The following topics are covered:
- 1.112.1 - Fundamentals of TCP/IP
- 1.112.3 - TCP/IP configuration and troubleshooting
- 1.112.4 - Configure Linux as a PPP client
- 1.113.1 - Configure and manage inetd, xinetd, and related services
- 1.113.2 - Operate and perform basic configuration of sendmail
- 1.113.3 - Operate and perform basic configuration of Apache
- 1.113.4 - Properly manage the NFS, smb, and nmb daemons
- 1.113.5 - Setup and configure basic DNS services
- 1.113.7 - Set up secure shell (OpenSSH)
- 1.107.2 - Manage printers and print queues
- 1.107.3 - Print files
- 1.107.4 - Install and configure local and remote printers
- 1.114.1 - Perform security administration tasks
- 1.114.2 - Setup host security
- 1.114.3 - Setup user level security
The numbers in the list above correspond to selected objectives from the LPI 102 examinations.
If there is time, we cover the following topics too, although they are part of the LPI 201 and 202
examination objectives:
- 2.208.3 - Implementing a proxy server
- 2.210.1 - DHCP configuration
Course structure
This course runs for four full days, usually from Monday to Thursday. The hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Included in the course fee are:
- LPI 102 training manual
- Four days of instructor led training
- Refreshments, including lunch
The training is conducted using SuSE Linux, although you may request a different distribution. The skills learned are
certainly not confined to SuSE Linux. The contents of this course are equally applicable to all distributions of Linux.
